James Brade Sword (1839-1915)

James Brade Sword spent his early childhood years in Macao, China.  He was hired by a civil engineer when he moved back to Philadelphia.  He started to paint in his early twenties.  He attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.  In 1863, he studied with George W. Nicholson, a landscape painter.  Sword kept up with his engineering projects, digging a railroad tunnel and enlarging Union Canal both in Pennsylvania.

The painting that we show in our newsletter is oil on canvas, signed lower right and measures 13.5 x 17.5.  This painting would be a nice addition to any home.
