French Artist
Size: 29x24. Medium: oil on canvas

Gustave Courbet: Gustave Courbet was the foremost realist painters in the mid-19th Century in France. Courbet was a member of a wealthy landowning family in rural France.
He studied at the Royal College in Besancon and then he went on to Paris. He was supposed to study law but continued to pursue a career in art. He exhibited at the Petit Palais, Paris and at the Palace of Fine Arts. He disliked the art juries and started building his own pavilions to exhibit his art. He painted very large mural style paintings that were not received well due to the size. He became very popular with his smaller works of landscapes, nudes and still lifes.
The painting is an oil on canvas painting of the outside of a courtyard looking down at the town. The painting measures 29 x 24 nicely framed. It is signed lower right.
