Artist Bio

George Loring Brown: George Loring Brown was born in Boston, Mass in 1814 and died in Malden, Mass in 1889. Brown started illustrating children’s books with Abel Bowen and Alonzo Hartwell.

In 1832 Brown headed to Paris, France where he was a student of the academician and studied with the late Eugene Isabey in the latter part of 1832 through 1833. Brown returned to the United States for a short time and once again left for Europe in 1839 to study Italian landscape views of Italy.

He once again came back to Boston, Mass. in 1859 and discovered the mountain ranges of New England. He painted the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He sold a panoramic view of Mt. Washington, which was purchased by Edward the VII, he was then the Prince of Wales in 1861.

This particular painting is titled on the back “Bridge Over the Old Lowell Medford, MA. The painting is signed and dated 1863 on the lower left. The painting measures 17 x 23
