Francis Henry Richardson was born in Boston, Mass. and studied as a draftsman and an architect before becoming a serious artist. He studied with Alice Knowlton and William Morris Hunt in Boston. In 1886 sailed to Paris and joined other artists such as Willard Metcalf and Childe Hassam at the Academie Julian in Paris. He also traveled to other European countries along with North Africa with Colin Campbell Cooper. He is sometimes considered an ex-patriot but did return to the United States periodically.
