Arthur Ignatius Keller was born in 1866 in New York City.  Keller studied at 17 at the National Academy of Design in New York.  He went to Germany to study for two years before returning to New York.   During the mid-1890’s, illustrative art for magazines and books became very popular.  Keller, out of financial necessity, started to work as an illustrator at the New York Herald.  This illustration of a man with his belongings on a raft in the ocean is a watercolor signed lower right.
