William Aiken Walker was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1838. He is primarily known for his depictions of plantation life. His paintings became famous by a purchase of a large painting of plantation life for half a million dollars. He was a primarily self-taught artist. He served in the confederate army and was wounded at the Seven Pines near Richmond, VA. He painted until he died in South Carolina in 1921.
