Frank Vining Smith was born in Abington Massachusetts in 1879. He graduated Whitman High School and then attended the Boston School of Museum of Fine Art. They studied with Frank Benson, Philip Hale and Edward Tarbell. During this period of his life, he was an illustrator for the cover of National Sportsman and the Boston Journal and the Boston Herald. He also painted portraits of ships.
