Charles Rosner was born in 1894 in Langendorf, Germany, where he developed a real fascination for the sea and ships.  He served aboard several sailing ships that he admired in his youth.  He sailed around cape horn an impressive five times before leaving his seaman’s life in Iquique, Peru.  He worked in the copper mines during World War I duration.  Rosner immigrated to Canada first and then to America.  He married in New York City and established a permanent home.  He went back to his first love, the sea.  He became a full-time marine painter of historic vessels and maritime subjects.  He did not get a lot of recognition for his work when he was alive, but he is recognized in several museums.

The painting is an oil on canvas of a ship on a roiling sea, measuring 18 x 24 with the frame signed lower right.
