Henry Ward Ranger was born in Syracuse, NY in 1873. He attended the College of Fine Art at Syracuse, where is father was a professor. He studied in Europe like number of artists did in his time. He moved to New York City where he started exhibiting his drawings and watercolors. Ward then discovered the Florence Griswald boarding house, a very well known artist colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Henry Ward Ranger
became the head of the artist colony for three years. He was known as "an American Version of a Barbizon Artist"
