One of the most famous and financially successful 19th Century painters as Albert Bierstadt. Albert Bierstadt was born in Solingen, Germany in 1830. He migrated with his parents to New Bedford, Massachusetts. In 1853 he went back to Dusseldorf and studied with Hudson River artists Sanford Gifford and Worthington Whittredge. In 1858 he had his first exhibition in the United States at the National Academy of Design in New York. He had fourteen paintings of the White Mountains. In 1860, he joined a military expedition, dramatically changing his career. He started painting vast western landscapes, especially Yosemite Falls, which made him an instant success. He returned in 1865 to New York and built a 35-room mansion along the Hudson River. He continued to travel through the United States, painting and exhibiting until his death in 1902 in New York City.
