Sanford Robinson Gifford  (1823-1880)

Early in Sanford Gifford’s career he painted portraits.  It was not until 1846 when he took a trip in the summer to the Catskills and Berkshire Hills that he gained an admiration of the Hudson River School artists.  Thomas Cole inspired him to paint landscapes.  He followed Thomas Cole walking and sketching in the Catskill area where he found landscape scenes and dramatic vistas.  His paintings have a luminous and brilliant quality of contrasting light and shadows.

In 1855 Gifford traveled to Europe, where he was influenced by Joseph Turner and his use of color.  In his travels through Europe, he ended up in Italy where he met American landscapist Albert Bierstadt and his use of color.  The painting we have highlighted for our newsletter is of Genoa, Italy.  The painting is measures 19 x 24 including the frame; it is oil on canvas and is signed lower left.   The painting is an excellent example of Gifford’s use of luminous light and contrasting shadows.
