Artist Bio

Granville Perkins Granville Perkins was born in 1830 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was hired at the age fifteen to paint for a theater production company as a scene painter. He was formally trained by the Pennsylvania Academy of Art by James Hamilton. Perkins traveled extensively between 1851 to 1856 with Ravel family who owned the theatre company. He painted several tropical scenes from Cuba, Jamaica, Yuca and Central America. Around 1860 he moved to New York City where he built his reputation for painting tropical and coastal landscapes.

He continued his art studies and worked for the Harper & Bros as an illustrator for “Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper.” Perkins was invited to exhibit at the National Academy of Design.

This painting is titled “Boating on the Palisades” it is an oil on canvas, signed lower left in good condition. The painting is framed in a Victorian frame measuring 22.5 x 26.
