Frederick Taubes was born in Poland in 1900, his family fled to Austria when World War I started. Taubes studied at the Imperial Museum and Academy of Art in Vienna. He studied and painted Dada, Cubism, Surrealism, and Expressionism before moving to New York City in 1930.
After moving to New York, he took modernist aspects into painting his portraits of society women such as Mrs. William Randolph Hearst and Clare Booth Luce. His later work was much looser, especially in his figurative painting.
He wrote dozens of art instruction books, The Mastery of Oil Paintings, he discussed the Flemish Renaissance painters. He also wrote many articles for American Artist Magazine.
The painting is an oil on canvas, signed lower left, of a couple. The painting measures 21 x 18 in very good condition.
