American Artist

Charles Frederick Kimball was born in 1831 the youngest of thirteen children in Monmouth, ME. As a youth, he studied with a local artist Charles Cole. He also studied art with John Greenleaf Cloudman in his 20's and married his daughter Annie. Mr. Kimball stopped painting professionally and became an expert cabinetmaker and stairway carpenter. Mr. Kimball felt that if he continued painting professionally that his work would become too commercial and not as valuable. He was heavily influenced by the Hudson River and the French Barbizon School. He died in Maine 1903.

This painting is a Maine scene painted on early artist board and is in very good condition. The piece is framed in an original gilt frame measuring 14 x 18. It is signed in red lower left C. Kimball. The painting was a gift which is stated under Kimball's signature "To my Friend J. F. Richardson.
