Alfonso Michel was born into a wealthy and politically powerful family in 1897 in Colima, Mexico. His parents separated and his father moved to Guadalajara with the children. Five years later his mother died and his father adopted the three children that she had with another man.
Michel had two major passions in his life art and the sea. He started painting in his teens and went intermittently to school. In 1922, his parents sent him to San Francisco where he took classes with other young artists. When he returned to Mexico, he associated himself with other Mexican artists from the area.
Michel lived in Colima, Mexico in a complex of former mansions. His work included landscapes, Colima shorelines, portraits. The Pinacoteca Universitaria Alfonso Michel was established in his name in 1996.
